Google bullish about latest social media venture

Facebook may have had its own way up until now in terms of social networking, with Google's failed attempts with Buzz two years ago setting the search giant back somewhat, but now Google feels it has something credible to work with.

Google has revealed that it is to launch another networking initiative, and from first impressions, this looks to be its most ambitious enterprise so far.

The fact that the 'Like' buttons employed by Facebook have proved to be a success has not gone unnoticed on Google and it has responded by revealing it is to use an equivalent in its results pages. These '+1' buttons will act in a similar way in that they will enable users to vote and recommend certain pages they find interesting.

If the venture turns out to be positive for them, then who knows how far Google could go with this?

Search advertisers will be eager to take on this new viral element and it could serve as a timely boost to their social media campaigns, opening up plenty of new opportunities for them in this area of their business.

It was also recently reported that social media increased by almost 200 percent between 2009 and 2010. The findings were the result of research by PricewaterhouseCoopers, for the Internet Advertising Bureau, and with online advertising being worth £4 billion last year, social media and SEO are becoming important factors that no business can afford to ignore any longer.
