O Rourke walks into Abbeylara

Leitrim playwright Seamus O’Rourke is the making the short journey across the county border to Abbeylara on May 6 for a performance of his critically acclaimed one man show Padraig Potts’ Guide to Walking.
Born and reared near the fictional Leitrim village of Drumnamee, Padraig Potts has, in the words of this creator, “a habit of just eating whatever is on his plate, metaphorically speaking”.
From growing up in rural Leitrim in the ’70s and ’80s, to falling in Love with Silvia Lang, “a perfect Protestant” girl and then marrying Mary Tague, the priest’s housekeeper, Padraig meanders his way through life until he comes to the realisation that the world isn’t as big as he first thought.
O’Rourke has a work ethic that would put many a farmer to shame. Since 2006, he has penned 15 plays, including four in 2012, as well as appearing in a number of productions, the latest of which was Livin’ Dred’s production of The High Kings of Kilburn. His video monologues are also well worth a watch on YouTube.

One of the most astute and irreverent chroniclers of rural life in contemporary Irish theatre, O’Rourke is bringing his latest offering, Padraig Potts’ Guide to Walking, to Abbeylara Parish Centre next Friday night, May 6 ( 8.30pm).
All proceeds raised on the night go to the Abbeylara Centre Church Funds. Tickets (€15) can be purchases at the door or in advance at Farrell’s Food Stores or Crawford’s.
