Great line-up for Open Door Sessions

With performances from band Safari, interview with artist Niki Purcell and Cavan singer-songwriter Paul McCann this month's Open Door Sessions is sure to entertain.

Running in conjunction with the Bailieborough Mid-Summer Festival the Open Door Sessions takes place from 9pm, Friday, July 21 in Fox's Bar & Lounge, Main Street, Bailieborough.
Safari is a relatively new three-piece Cavan/Dublin band based in the capital. Influences include surf music and new wave. Since forming, the band has performed in many venues across Ireland, including Whelan's in Dublin and The Loft in Galway. Band members are Bailieborough's own Sam Geraghty (vocals/guitar), Emil Kapusta (drums) and Tymek Kocurkiewicz (guitar/bass).
Niki Purcell is exhibiting in Bailieborough Library as part of the Mid-Summer Festival from Thursday, July 20. An artist living and working in Ireland she works primarily in oil paints, using gestural strokes to build up textured layers of paint. Her preferred subject matter are landscapes, both representative and imagined but always Irish landscapes. Niki Purcell attempts to depict not objective reality but rather the subjective emotions and responses to her surroundings. Purcell lives in an old coastguard station on the borders of Wicklow and Wexford and is highly influenced by its landscape and seascape. To be surrounded by such wildness has allowed Purcell to explore not only her surroundings but also her emotional responses to her environment, a world that changes daily if not hourly. Purcell's work expresses these movements and shifting emotions. Purcell graduated from NCAD and has worked as an artist ever since. Exhibiting extensively in the Hugh Lane, The Guinness Hopstore and the RHA Gallery, to name a few, Purcell's work can be found in many important collections including the OPW.
Paul McCann is a singer, song writer and multi-instrumentalist from County Cavan. Paul has been playing in various bands since 1996, including Aine Cahill's band, power pop band 'The Plan' and Johnny Cash tribute 'Get Rhythm'. He has performed with Pugwash, The Strypes, Sandy Kelly, Duncan Maitland of Picturehouse fame and Nelson Bragg (Brian Wilson Band/Beach Boys), among others.
In 2015 Paul released his highly-acclaimed debut EP which was titled 'The Magician'. The Magician EP was recorded and mixed at JAM Studio's with Paul performing most of the instrumentation himself and also co-producing alongside Martin Quinn. July 2017 will see the release of his second self-produced and home recorded EP titled ‘Press Record'. Whilst still delivering solid songs, this release reflects a maturity in both writing and technique as he delves into new musical territories. A full album release is also scheduled for late 2017. Paul is currently performing in venues around Ireland and the UK.
Admission is free and donations are always welcome. Open Door Sessions is grant aided by Cavan Arts.
