Fundraising day for Mary set

A fundraising day aimed at supporting Blacklion girl, Mary Philbin’s treatment and recovery from cancer is to take place in Cavan on Sunday, May 12.

Inspirational cancer survivor Liam Ryan, from Westmeath, is the driving force behind the 10k run or walk, with the funds raised being used to assist in Mary’s fight against cancer.

Twenty-six-year-old Mary suffers from a compromised airway, and is unable eat solid food following treatment for a malignant tumour which affected the area of her pharynx back in 2005. Currently she is in the US with her mother Eileen, where she is being treated by specialist Doctor Christopher Sullivan in North Carolina.

Mr Ryan’s own survivor story has been used spur on events across the country to raise millions of euros in funds for fellow cancer patients. He has now turned his attentions to supporting Mary in her appeal and the official ‘Day for Mary’ is taking place on May 12 at various locations, including her native Cavan, and Sligo where she attended college.

Liam is appealing to people from all across Cavan and neighbouring counties to come on board and assist the Philbin family in their efforts to raise urgent funds to assist with the costs of the potentially life-saving medical treatment.

The 10k run or walk on May 12 will be followed by a social event at The Hotel Kilmore at 8pm where Liam will be among a number of speakers.

The Mary Philbin treatment fund account is now open at Bank of Ireland, Manorhamilton. Account number: 18987405 sort code: 90-54-08.
