Cavan Town scoops Europe award

Cavan Town has won the Council of Europe's 'diploma of honour', the highest award given to local and regional authorities for their active promotion of  European unity and its ideals.
The honour is bestowed on towns who have involved themselves in events which promote European unity such as twinnings and exchange visits and only a small number, up to 30 awards European wide, are granted each year.
Deputy Joe O’Reilly (FG), who is the leader of the Irish delegation of parliamentarians to the Council of Europe, congratulated the town and the local authority on its success.
“‘I was delighted to hear of the official announcement last week, in Strasbourg. It was a pleasure and an honour to be able to bring home such good news for the Town.”
Mayors of the winning towns are presented with a parchment bearing the date and the authority's name at an official ceremony at the Palais de l'Europe in Strasbourg by the chairperson of the Committee of Social Affairs, Health and Sustainable Development,  at a ceremony at the end of June.
“This is a great honour for the town,' said Deputy Reilly. 'The Europe prize, diploma of honour is the first step in selecting Europe prizewinners. Some 30 diplomas are awarded every year to towns and cities that are seen to be promoting the idea of European unity. This year the competition was strong however, Cavan Town were clear front runners.
“I would like to pay tribute to the officials in the Town Council, in particular, Mr Brian Hora, Cavan Town Clerk, for all the hard work they put in, in advance of the announcement. It is a great achievement and one that Cavan Town should be proud of”, concluded the Deputy.
