Cavan Ploughing Championship called-off

With great disappointment the County Championships set to held in Kingscourt this weekend have been called off.

Having had to postpone the event, originally planned for bank holiday Monday, the Co Cavan Ploughing Association has now had to cancel altogether plans to host its 32nd Annual Ploughing Championship.

It is the first time since the year of the foot and mouth outbreak that the event has had to be scratched from the calendar.

Samuel Thompson, secretary, told The Anglo-Celt all possible scenarios were taken into consideration in the hope of keeping the event going this year, but that inclement weather had forced the cancellation.

'We met and agreed if we couldn't hold the event in the way we wanted to then there was no point in putting it on. Any drop of rain is just unfortunately sitting on ground and staying there. We had hoped the change in date might help it, we're midway through May and the rain is still here. What can we do? We'll just have to look to next year,' a resigned Mr Thompson told The Celt.

All the ploughmen have been notified.
