Jack Keyes.

County manager to bring decade long tenure to an end

Jack Keyes dropped a bombshell at Monday’s meeting of Cavan County Council, when he calmly announced that the April meeting will be his last meeting as County Manager.

Mr Keyes, who oversaw the arrival of a hat-trick of All-Ireland fleadhanna to the county town, will be leaving his current post on May 3, bringing to an end a decade long tenure at the helm of Cavan County Council.
Mr Keyes thanked everyone for having the privilege of working with them over the last 10 years.
“I look forward to living in Cavan and working with all the people I have worked with before, as a member of the community,” Mr Keyes told March’s Council meeting. “With your agreement we can have a more detailed look back over the last 10 years on another day and look forward to the future of Cavan.”

Shock
There was shock and regret that Mr Keyes, who was popular across the political spectrum, will be departing the scene. Cllrs Dessie Boylan (Fine Gael), Danny Brady (Fianna Fáil) and Charlie Boylan (Sinn Féin) briefly extolled his virtues while touching on some of his contributions to public life in County Cavan.
The input into the organisation of the successful All Ireland Fleadhs obviously came in for mention, as did his flair for promoting enterprise, small business, culture, cross border tourism and of course the Scouting Centre at Castlesaunderson and the Geo Park.
He was also commended for attending all meetings and promoting Cavan with vision at home and abroad. Chairman Val Smith also joined in the praises.
Mr Keyes thanked the members sincerely for their kind comments.
