Scan shows boxer Nevin has breaks to both legs

Fresh hospital scans on injuries sustained by Cavan-trained boxed and Olympic silver medallist John Joe Nevin during a vicious weekend attack in Mullingar show that he has suffered breaks to both his legs.

It had initially been reported that only the boxer's right leg was broken. He had suffered breaks to the bone in two places following the assault, however, a scan on yesterday afternoon, Tuesday April 8 in an area which was causing him pain now shows a fracture just above the left ankle.

Mr Nevin will be confined to a wheelchair for several weeks his trainer, Brian McKeown confirmed.

The injuries are a major blow to the boxer who had started his professional career so brightly in the US, with a convincing début win over Alberto Candelaria in Boston on St Parick's Day.

Gardaí have since released a man, aged in his 20s, who was questioned in connection with an attack on Nevin.

A file is being prepared for the DPP.

'Obviously, he's out of boxing for a while,' said Mr Mc Keown told The Anglo-Celt.

'But knowing the lad, and knowing the strength of his character, and his ability an everything else, I still think we can bounce back.'
