Shane P O'Reilly selected as county cathaoirleach

A delighted Shane P O’Reilly was this afternoon selected as the chair of Cavan County Council.
The chamber paid tribute to the Mullagh man, who said the last time there was a cathaoirleach from the townland it was 102 years ago, in the form of TP McCann.
An emotional Cllr O’Reilly dedicated the “prestigious privilege” to his family and to his father who recently passed away.
“I’m humbled by the trust shown in me by the county council, my Fianna Fail colleagues and the electorate.
“It’s a proud day for myself, my family and my home town of Mullagh and I hope I can ably represent them. This is the realisation of a dream for me, politically,” he said.
Colleagues paid tribute to the new chair, saluting his down-to-earth manner, his sense of humour and his commitment.
“I hope I can repay the trust shown in me and be a competent ambassador at home and abroad. Without the support of my family I couldn’t have been done, my 10-years’ suffering wife Alicia [Cllr O’Reilly is 10 years in the chamber] and my five kids, to my mother, who’s in Spain and to one person who can’t be here but is here in spirit, to my biggest supporter, my father who passed away in February. Thanks to all for their unwavering support without whom I wouldn’t be here,” said the Fianna Fail man whose pride overflowed into emotion.
He welcomed new members to the chamber and commiserated with those who had lost seats before delivering an open invitation to the Top of The Town for a celebratory reception.
