Cavan and monaghan clean up in ibal litter survey

The latest survey by business group Irish Business Against Litter shows that Cavan and Monaghan are both “Cleaner than European Norms”, and in 2nd and 8th position respectively in the ranking of 40 areas surveyed. Monaghan improved by 26 places on the previous result in 2013. In all, 75% of towns and cities were found to be as clean as or cleaner than their European counterparts. Kilkenny was again Ireland’s cleanest area.

The An Taisce surveyors reported: “A superb top ten result for Monaghan following some average rankings last year. Eight out of the ten sites surveyed getting the top litter grade and there were no seriously littered sites. Some of the particularly good top ranking sites included Monaghan Museum (very nicely presented built environment), Car Park beside Graveyard and Recycle Facility within this Car Park.“

Cavan has consistently scored exceptionally well in the IBAL survey and things were no different this time around. Cycle lanes were being installed on a couple of the approach roads e.g. Ballinagh and Dublin – evidence of continuously striving to improve the environment. Surveyor also spoke with some of the ‘street cleaners’ who indicated how proud they are in Cavan of Litter Free Status – it is this sense of pride that appears to set Cavan apart from other towns.”
