Chamber urges yes vote

The Cavan Chamber is urging a yes vote in Friday's Lisbon Treaty Referendum. The local Chamber was among a number of politicians, groups and individuals who threw their weight behind the Cavan For Europe campaign, led by former MEP Pat Cox, when he visited Cavan last Thursday.

Chamber president Eamon McDwyer is pointing to the investment that Europe has made in Ireland and the social and economic progress that the country has made since joining the EEC.

This, he says, includes improved infrastructure such as the N3 Cavan/Dublin Road, the N55 Cavan/Athlone Road, the by-passes of CAvan and Virginia; better waste management facilities with civic amenity centres at Bailieboro, Ballyconnell and Corranure, bring bank sites; improved water quality and broadband; the LEADER programme; a €16 million investment in childcare facilities in the county; €30 million to border counties to improve cross-border health services and access; not to mention EU funding for start-up business funding channelled through the County Enterprise Board.

Credit union scholarships

Education is the lightest load you can carry they say, and in these trying economic times, Bailieborough Credit Union is making a contribution to the labour force of tomorrow.

The credit union has announced details of this year's scholarship award. Similarly to last year, they are awarding three scholarships, each for €1,000, to students who completed the Leaving Certificate in 2009 who are going into third level education this year. To qualify, students need to be a member of the Bailieborough Credit Union. Closing date is October 31. For more details, contact Bailieborough Credit Union at 042-9666009.
