Reflections with Fr Ultan McGoohan
A Visit to Glasnevin Two hundred years of history
We are drawing towards that time of year when we begin to reflect on the highs and lows of 2011. One of my cultural highlights from the year was a tour I experienced in September of a graveyard! Before you turn the page, please bear with me. This was no ordinary graveyard. This graveyard was like a walk through the last 200 years of Irish History. Glasnevin cemetery has been the principal graveyard in Dublin since the middle of the 19th century. Between its boundaries are laid to rest many thousands of ordinary citizens of Dublin and some of the great figures of Irish history.
