The defeat of Tully in the '61 election was a huge disappointment for his supporters all over Cavan but for the candidate himself it was a serious personal matter.
At that time a TD had to have a full 13 years in the Dáil to be entitled to a pension. Nowadays they just have to sign the book before heading to the bar.
