Disqualified driver failed to notify motor insurer

A man who had a road accident while on his way back from his insurance company to make a payment towards a premium but was disqualified from driving at the time, appeared before Judge MacBride at a sitting of Cavan District Court for driving while disqualified and without insurance at Greaghagibney, Stradone on September 8, 2009. Eduards Kozlovs, (42), 12, Convent View, Carrickmacross, was disqualified from driving for eight years and given a six-months suspended prison sentence on his entering a bond to keep the peace for two years. He was also fined €1,000. The court heard that the defendant had a Latvian driving licence and insurance but was disqualified at the time of the offence and hadn't told his insurance company. The defendant's solicitor described it as ironic that his client was on his way back from Quinn Direct, where he was making a payment, when he "drove under a lorry" and wrote off his own car. His partner was a named driver on the policy but he drove to Cavan to make the payment because she was ill, the court heard. The lorry driver had been compensated by the insurance company but the defendant in turn had to compensate them as he didn't inform them of his disqualification, the court was told.
