Clones man remanded in custody for sale or supply of €456K of drugs

Judge Sean MacBride.

A Clones man is to appear in Harristown District Court this Friday in connection with charges of possession of €456,000 worth of illegal drugs for sale or supply.

Thirty-three-year-old father of one, Mark Beggan, 5 Largy Court, Clones appeared in Cavan District Court on November 24 and an application for bail was rejected.

Opposing the bail application, Inspector Drea told Judge MacBride that Gardaí believe the defendant is in receipt of Social Welfare although he has a job earning €600 a week for a transport company and has €40,000 in a credit union account.

From the investigating team, Detective Garda Ashley McEvoy told the court that they believed the defendant, living close to the Border, travelling outside the jurisdiction with his job and in possession of a Northern Ireland registered vehicle, would be a flight risk if released on bail.

Solicitor for the defendant Martin Cosgrove told Judge MacBride that his client was born and bred in Clones and is living there with his wife of four years and their child. He said his only connection with the North was that he was working for four months for a company from the Armagh area.

The defendant gave assurances that he had no intention of leaving Southern Ireland.

"I accept what I did was wrong... I want a bit of time with my wife and child," he said.

Judge MacBride refused the bail application and remanded the defendant to Harristown District Court the next day, at which time he was further remanded to a sitting of the same court this Friday.
