Handball heroes Paul Brady and Michael Finnegan return from the World Championships today (Wednesday) having accomplished their mission of bringing two senior world titles home with them.
Brady overcame a serious quad injury to become the first player in the history of the sport to win three World Open Singles titles, while Finnegan was forced to pair up with a new partner, Eoin Kennedy of Dublin, and excelled in the Open Doubles.
"I'm too old for this!" joked popular Kingscourt player Finnegan after his final win in tandem with Dubliner Eoin Kennedy over Westmeath-Meath pair Robbie McCarthy and Brian Carroll.
The doubles specialist was entitled to smile, as he turned in a career-best performance to take his third world title, following wins in the Under 15 Singles in 1991 and the Open Doubles in 2003.
Brady admitted that the success - and the manner of it - "has yet to sink in".
"'I just can't express what I'm feeling, there are a lot of emotions, but I'm hugely relieved to have come through that and it will take a while for it to sink in," said the dual star after his nailbiting final win over Allan Garner of Texas.
