Cllr calls foul on dog poo

A Belturbet Town Councillor has urged dog owners in the town and surrounding areas to act responsibly and clean up after their animals. Fianna Fáil’s Liz McDermott, who was to the fore in persuading the local authority to install dog poo bins around last year, says that fouling on local streets and walkways in and around the town is becoming an issue once again.
Of the dog bins installed last year, four in total, two were located on Turbet Island with one of those was unceremoniously dumped into the River Erne.
At the January member’s meeting Cllr McDermott was given assurances that both the Litter and Dog Warden would be kept informed of the issue. She has asked for the owners of offending pooches to be made an example of.
Failure to clean up your dog’s waste can lead to a €150 “on-the-spot” fine or up to €3,000 if brought before the courts.
“Dog dirt is a health hazard and some day your child might be affected by someone else’s failure to do the right thing,” Cllr McDermott remarked. “It’s a big problem. Not only is it a problem for people out walking, but from a tourist point of view it puts a very bad look on the town.”
