The death occurred at his home in New Milford, New Jersey, USA, of Patrick (Pat) Lawler, son of the late Matthew and Margaret Lawler of Killygarry House, Killygarry, Cavan.

As a child, Pat received his early education in Killygarry NS and later attended St. Patrick"s College, Cavan. He emigrated to New York in 1958 where he met and married Evelyn Maye, a Sligo lady.

In New York, Pat worked hard and became involved in local commerce. In the restaurant and bar business he owned popular hostelries like "His Honours' in the Wall Street district and "The Irish Rose". Naturally he became a member of "The Cavan Men"s Association" and enjoyed meeting with his fellow county men and discussing events back home. The arrival of "The Anglo-Celt" each week was eagerly looked forward to and he read it from cover to cover. Interacting with people was most important to Pat and when ill health forced him to slow down and withdraw from the business world he became involved in the local schools until he eventually retired in 2007.

In his final illness, Pat found strength and consolation through the intercession of St. Padre Pio.

He departed this life and joined his beloved grand-daughter Kiera on February 22 last. His funeral mass at Ascension Church, New Milford, was an occasion, which became a reunion for people who left Cavan and Ireland in years gone by and have made America their home.

Pat is survived by his devoted wife of 49 years, Evelyn; his children Patricia, James, Annie and Terence; sons-in-law, Martin and John; daughters-in-law, Pamela and Megan; grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Nicholas, Megan, Rory, Madison; his sister Mairead Bourke, Killeshandra and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. He was pre-deceased by his brother Matt.

I remember Pat (Patsy) Lawler as a young boy going to Killygarry school and Chapel. He was a fine looking man and always smartly dressed. I remember his mother also whose grave is near the sacristy door of the chapel. I was happy to read of his devotion to St. Padre Pio as I am a capuchin myself working as a missionary in western Province of Zambia for neary 40 years. My deepest condolences to his family who mourn his passing, and may they be strenthened by the hope in the Resurrection. Ar dheis De go rabh a hanam dhilis. Jim Connolly. (Fr.)
