Son of Gerard and the late Dettie McCaul, the family originally came from Drumliffe, Ballyhaise in Co. Cavan and settled in Dundalk when Gerard purchased a pub.

Garrett was educated at St. Mary's College and took his degree, followed by his H. Dip. in UCD.

After graduating, Garrett left for America with his wife, Barbara and returned to Ireland after ten years.

Having then taken his Masters at UCD, Garrett entered teaching in Coláiste Íde where he taught Maths and Business Studies. He was very highly regarded by colleagues and pupils alike and his passing was deeply mourned in his school and community.

Garrett took ill in February, 2008 and having borne his illness with great fortitude he died on December 14th.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara, sons, Shane, Darren, Ryan and Dylan, father, Gerard, (Bay Estate, Dundalk), brother Niall (Dundalk) and sister, Karina Bourne (Manchester) and by relatives and friends.

He was predeceased by his mother in 1973.

Having reposed at his home in Malahide, Garrett's remains were taken to St. Sylvester's Church, Malahide where Requiem Mass was celebrated by Rev. P. Thornton. Also in attendance was Fr. D. Smyth who married Garrett and Barbara 22 years ago.

The Readings were given by Liane, Dylan and Sean and the Prayers of Intercession by Jammie, Mandy, Dylan, Martin, Eileen and Ria. The Offertory Gifts were presented by Niall and Karina.

A beautifully written eulogy of their time together was given by Garrett's wife, Barbara and a Communion Reflection was given by friend, Tom Dunleavy and another by Pat Kane.
