Mr Jimmy Smyth, Church St, Cootehill

The death took place of Mr Jimmy Smyth, 24 Church Street, Cootehill on December 19, at Cavan General Hospital. Jimmy was born in Aghabog, Swanns Cross and he moved to Cootehill in 1965 after marrying Margaret (nee) Cassidy (formerly Bridge Street Cootehill). Jimmy worked for Coyle's furniture Monaghan and Brady's Cootehill as a lorry driver before starting work for Cootehill Poultry Products on the daily Dublin run in 1965 from which he took early retirement in 1999. On retirement Jimmy did not put his feet up, he spent most of his days down in his beloved Aghabog. Jimmy called bingo for Cootehill GAA for 27 years and also in hotels around surrounding counties for many years. Removal of remains took place from his daughter's Mary Deery's residence on December 21 to St Michael's Church Cootehill at 6pm where they were received by Fr Gerard Cassidy (nephew), Fr Owen Collins and Fr Paul Casey. Burial took place in St Michael's Cemetery, Cootehill following Requiem Mass on Thursday, December 22 which was concelebrated by Fr Gerard Cassidy and Fr Owen Collins, music provided by Carmel and Caroline Mee. Jimmy was predeceased by his wife Margaret in August 2003 and is survived by his son Terence, daughter Mary Deery, sister Maureen Green Blacklion, son-in-law, daughter-in-law and three grandchildren. Jimmy was a very friendly man and was known far and wide, and will be sadly missed. RIP.
