Mr. Peter McDermott, Cootehill and Drumgoon

The late Mr. Peter McDermott.

The feeling of loss in the Drumgoon and Cootehill areas following the untimely passing of 58-year-old Mr. Peter McDermott, affectionately known as Bosco, was reflected in the huge overflow crowd that attended his funeral Mass at St. Michael's Church, Cootehill on July 17.

A native of Ardee Road, Carrickmacross, Bosco died on Thursday, July 15 at his home in Bough, Cootehill following a long illness of which he complained little and which was never allowed to stop him living life to the full.

Well known as an ardent supporter of Drumgoon GFC, and also as a keen follower of horse racing, and in more recent years a man who travelled widely around the world, his positive attitude to life in general was summed up by the funeral offerings, which included a Drumgoon jersey, his passport, and a photo of his grandchildren.

Also included was a bottle of wine that Peter, a plumber by trade, had been given by Charlie Haughey in 1978 for work done on the former taoiseach's mansion.

Fond of telling jokes and recounting funny stories, Bosco was always to be found where the fun was. In many cases, that would mean the celebrations following a successful day on the pitch for Drumgoon Éire Óg GFC. He rarely missed a game at Boyle Park, where he regularly helped out as an umpire. A high point came last year when the Drumgoon ladies won the senior shield with his daughters Aisling and Muireann on the team.

Horse racing and betting was another passion for Peter, and he often travelled to race meetings at Punchestown, Fairyhouse and elsewhere. He had a soft spot for traditional music, and in more recent years travel became the big thing, and he went to places like South Africa, Thailand and Malaysia.

Bosco was also a great family man, and raising and looking after his children were his prime concerns following the death of his wife Marion 18 years ago. His love for his family was always evident, and this reciprocal affection continued when the grandchildren came along.

Celebrating the funeral Mass at St. Michael's Church, was Fr. Paul Casey, aided by Fr. Kevin Donohoe and Fr. Dan Sheridan in a moving and at times uplifting ceremony. Peter was afterwards laid to rest at the Middle Chapel Cemetery.

He is survived by his daughters Aisling, Muireann and Niamh, by his son Odhrán, grandchildren Naoise and Rhys, brothers and sisters Lawrence, Mary, Eileen, Philip, Rosemary and Anne, and by a large family circle, to whom deepest sympathy is extended.

The month's mind Mass is at St. Mary's Middle Chapel on Saturday, August 21.
