Cavan people condemn the €1.25bn payment to Anglo's unsecured bondholders

Concerned citizens and local Sinn Féin representatives protested on Wednesday at the Market Square against the €1.2 billion handover to unsecured senior bondholders in the former Anglo Irish Bank, which will take place on March 31. The protesters collected signed postcards by members of the public also against the bailout later marched to Deputy Joe O'Reilly's constituency office to hand them over. Photos: Sheila Rooney
Party activist and Cavan Town Council member Brian McKeown, said this is the first such event to be held in Cavan and they plan to stage more during the year. "It affords people a chance to voice their objections," he said.
The money being handed over was being cut from the health services, schools and local services, including garda stations and rural transport, he claimed. "It is being taken from the people in VAT hikes and the new household charge."
