Sin é for Cootehill Town Council

Sean McMahon

A piece of history was made in Cootehill on Monday night, when the nine town councillors sat down in the council chamber for the very last time. Before departing the scene for the final time, all nine councillors spoke about how they enjoyed working for the betterment of the town and its people over the years.
Chairman Harry McCabe spoke about the fact that the members co-operated at meetings for the sake of the town and party politics were put aside. All the councillors fondly recalled their time on the council and outlined the many achievements over the years.

To bring the final curtain down on proceedings, Chairman McCabe thanked the members for allowing him, over the years, to take on the role and proposed that the chain of office be mounted in a frame and given to the library as a memento of the town council.
It was agreed that Cllr Aidan Boyle hand over the chain to the library.
He pointed out that the rotation of the chair had worked very well and it had afforded more people to assume the role and appreciate what it is like to be in the chair, and hearing the views of the different councillors.
He also thanked all the members for their hard work and co-operation over the years.
“When we came into this chamber, we set party politics aside and we worked as best we could for the town. That has been the main thing for me over the last fifteen years, since I was elected,” said Cllr McCabe.
Everyone in the chamber worked with one purpose, to try to improve the town, he said.
“The town has improved over the years and I hope, with the council being gone, that the same effort will be put in through the new [county] councillors that are elected.”
To loud applause, the last words from the chairman were “sin é from the council!”
