Hands up if you like heritage week

Minister Heather Humphreys was happy to strike a statuesque pose when speaking on Sunday at Dartrey Temple, north-west County Monaghan.

The Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht was addressing the crowd, at a Heritage Week event, in front of the 1774 Joseph Wilton life size Carrara marble sculpture which has just been fully restored by Eoghan Daltun, Nicola deSilvestri & Jason Ellis as part of a conservation plan by the Dartrey Heritage Group.

The architect leading the plan is John Redmill. The project is being completed in phases and this final phase is being funded by Cavan-Monaghan Leader coupled with the London Chapter of the Irish Georgian Society.

In the background is Noel Carney, chairman of the Heritage Group who dressed in period costume and acted the part of Lord Dartrey to explain the reason why he employed the famous architect James Wyatt (1746-1813) and the renown sculptor Joseph Wilton (1722-1803) to create the magnificent Palliadian style temple based on the Pantheon in Rome dedicated to his wife Lady Anne Dawson.
The occasion was part of the Heritage Week events planned in County Monaghan and was very well attended by over 100 people. Noel went on to thank Coillte Teoranta for their support and licence to work on their property, also the Heritage Council, Dept of the Environment, Monaghan County Council, the late John Coote of Bellamont Forest House and all the local people who supported their fund raising.
