Missing man gerry daly to be buried with his late mother

More than three years after he disappeared, the remains of Gerry Daly are to be buried with his late mother Brigid who the family say died of a broken heart a year after he disappeared from his Cornaveagh, Bailieborough, home in June, 2011.

Gardai have begun an investigation after human remains were found in a bog near Kells.

The body was discovered as excavation work was carried out at Oristown Bog on Thursday.

Gardai confirmed on Saturday evening that the body found is that of Gerry Daly.

The burnt-out shell of a car which was reported stolen in Kells in 2003 was also found at the scene.

Mr Daly was last seen by his partner in Cornaveagh on the evening of June 26, 2011.

State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy carried out a post-mortem examination on the remains at Our Lady’s Hospital, Navan, on Friday.

Gardaí confirmed a forensic examination of the scene has been carried out and their investigation is continuing.

Great sadness

A family statement from the Dalys was released by gardai after it emerged the remains were that of the dad of three.

It read: “It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we let you know that our brother, Gerard, has been located.

“We wish to offer our sincere thanks to all of you who have supported us in our search for our brother over the past three years.

“At this time our family is working to come to terms with this new turn of events and to begin the grieving process.

“Your kinds thoughts and prayers have helped us come this far and will continue to carry us through the next phase of our ordeal.”
