One dead at fermanagh traveller wedding shooting

One of two men shot at a wedding in Fermanagh today has died, the PSNI has said. The shootings happened at St Mary's church in Newtownbutler.

It is understood the wedding was being attended by members of the Travelling community.

The dead man was in his 60s and had been flown to hospital in a police helicopter but later died from his injuries.

The other victim, in his 30s, did not suffer life-threatening injuries.

Newtownbutler Sinn Féin councillor Thomas O'Reilly, whose office overlooks the scene, said the community had been left stunned.

St Mary's Primary School is adjacent to the churchyard where the incident happened.

'In a very small rural area and village such as Newtownbutler, it is shocking that something like this would happen,' said Mr O'Reilly.

PSNI Detective Chief Inspector Michael Harvey said: 'The victim was shot along with another man outside a chapel on Main Street in Newtownbutler at around 1pm this afternoon. He was flown to hospital in a police helicopter but died from his injuries. The other man, who is in his 30s, is not believed to have sustained any life-threatening injuries.'
