A local family have described feeling “sickened” after finding their family pet, ‘Geordie’ the kitten, had been shot in the head with a three-inch nail, believed to be fired from a nail-gun, in the latest of a string of savage attacks on much-loved pets in a Cavan Town estate.

As a result of the extensive injuries suffered, which caused severe motor-control issues in the animal, year-old black and white kitten ‘Geordie’ was put to sleep last Monday afternoon, February 23.

This video footage obtained by The Anglo-Celt shows the devastating effect the injury had on the cat and its movements. Again, the video contains scenes viewers may find disturbing.

Owners Reagan Bunting and her partner David Fitzgerald from the Gallops, Cavan Town, now plan to lodge a formal complaint with gardaí about the incident.

“He was one of the best cats we’ve ever had - lively, sprightly, affectionate, cuddly, always jumping up on you. It’s sickening to think that someone is out there shooting defenceless animals like this. If you’re prepared to shoot a defenceless animal with a nail gun, what’s to say they couldn’t do it to one of the kids out on the street. If one of these nails missed what they’re being shot at, hit off something else and ricocheted and hits a kid... what then?” asked an emotional Mr Fitzgerald.
