Chilly weather expected to stay until midweek

The yellow weather warning issued by Met Éireann, warning of severe snow and ice in some places, is expected to remain in place until Wednesday at least.

Several centimetres of snow fell across the county last night, and across the border and north Midlands areas last night, causing difficult driving conditions in some areas.

The cold snap is being blamed on a cold airmass from Canada, with temperatures drop to minus 2 degrees in some low lying areas last night, Sunday, March 2, and snow, sleet, and hail, as well as thundery showers forecast to continue countrywide until Thursday.

According to Met Éireann: “A cold airmass from Canada bringing snow showers over the next couple of days. In the West and North, several cms accumulation over hills with a few cms at low levels likely. Slight accumulations possible elsewhere. Icy patches.”

Temperatures are expected to rise later in the week, with milder conditions by the weekend.

Gardaí have asked road users to exercise care during the inclement weather.
