Eight people in cavan get cancer diagnosis every week

Eight people in Cavan are diagnosed with cancer every week, according to figures from the Irish Cancer Society. The figures were revealed as part of the launch of the society’s Daffodil Day fundraiser, to take place tomorrow (Friday), March 27.

This year, the 28th Daffodil Day, the society has a fundraising target of €3.5m to fund its cancer care services given what it says is a growth in cancer cases.

Speaking at the launch, John McCormack, the CEO of the Irish Cancer Society said: “Every family in Cavan is touched by cancer and these new figures confirm that cancer rates are growing. As cancer is increasing so are our efforts to fight it. As the national cancer charity, we are working harder to ensure that every family in need of support in Cavan has access to our services. To meet the increased demand for help as more people get and survive cancer we need to raise even more money this year on Daffodil Day.”

Funds raised on the day by volunteers go directly to the work of the society with funds raised locally staying locally across a range of services: support, prevention, research and advocacy. Night nursing is one services funded by Daffodil Day. In 2014, the society’s nurses provided 116 nights of care to 36 patients in Cavan.

The Irish Cancer Society is seeking volunteers for the national collection day and is calling on people to support it. Call 1850 60 60 60 or visit www.cancer.ie/daffodilday
