Gsoc investigate bypass collision

The Garda Siochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) was in Cavan yesterday (Tuesday, April 7) investigating the circumstances around a Bank Holiday Monday collision between a car and a motorcycle in which a man lost a leg.

A 44-year-old motorcyclist was airlifted to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin at around 7.45pm on Monday after the crash, which happened at around 5pm on the Cavan bypass outside of Cavan town.

As of yesterday, his condition was described as serious.

A 24-year-old male was arrested at the scene on suspicion of dangerous driving and is due before Carrickmacross District Court this morning.

Yesterday morning, the incident was referred to GSOC for examination as it was reported that the car involved in the collision was being sought by gardaí.

The GSOC investigation is to ascertain whether the Garda interest in the car was justified and proportionate.
