Baby dies at cavan hospital following c section

Cavan General Hospital has confirmed that a new-born baby died in the maternity department of the hospital yesterday (Tuesday), May 12. The HSE has already issued a statement saying that a full review of the circumstances surrounding the death will be carried out.

This is the fourth such baby death at the hospital since November 2012. It's understood that the baby died yesterday after it was delivered by C-section and that the latest family affected are from County Cavan.

The Celt reported last month that a Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) investigation into the safety, quality and standard of maternity services at Cavan General Hospital in light of the three previous adverse outcomes during childbirth had not yet begun.

In May of last year, the then Health Minister James Reilly had promised the review. He pledged the review while in County Cavan to open the Kingscourt Health Centre.

The review, he said, would be 'as part of' the ongoing investigation into maternity services at the Midlands Hospital in Portlaoise.

A report into the 2012 incident in Cavan has been subject to a High Court injunction.
The findings, carried out by an external review, were quashed last September, and its contents and any recommendations attached banned from publication.

HIQA las month told the Celt that it is aware of that outcome and, as part of their own internal process, have directed management at Cavan General to forward any new report once it is finalised.
“In the interim we have sought and received assurances that any risks identified in the injuncted report have been dealt with and controls are now in place,” they said.
A new review of the November 2012 incident, involving the death of baby Jamie Flynn from Navan, and two other infants within a month of each other in April-May last year are “currently ongoing”, the HSE said last month.

Deepest sympathy

Meanwhile in light of yesterday's death, the HSE has said: 'Cavan & Monaghan Hospital management would like to offer its deepest sympathy to the family on their tragic loss and hope they will be given the privacy that they need to deal with their grief. The hospital will give the family every assistance and support required.'
