Jl staff still waiting on redundancy pay outs

Ten workers, who lost their jobs when a Bailieborough-based hardware store went bust, have still not received any redundancy payments. The staff are still waiting on a decision on their redundancy applications - three months after the business shut its doors, The Anglo-Celt can reveal.
It is understood a technical glitch after Dublin-based firm, Baker Tilly Ryan Glennon, was appointed receiver to the former J&L Stores, meant redundancy details were only lodged with the Department of Social Protection as recently as a fortnight ago.
This means that the staff affected could have to wait a further three to four months before any payments to them are made.
J&L Stores, operated by the Cassells family on Main Street in the East Cavan town since 1988, had been part of the Arro Group prior to its closure, when Bank of Ireland moved on loans owed by the local company.
The plight of former J&L workers was raised at the recent monthly meeting of Cavan County Council where their situation was juxtaposed to that of staff affected by the closure of Cleary’s Department Store in Dublin.
Fianna Fáil councillor Niamh Smyth stated the Social Protection system had been “less than helpful” in terms of supporting for the now unemployed local workers or the families, with no such Ministerial intervention as was the case with the O’Connell Street store.
“In my view, the staff of J&L Stores who had given 27 years’ service deserve the exact same quick response and support as those staff devastated by the closure of Cleary’s Store. It is unacceptable that workers would be left waiting for payments after they were made redundant.
