Fraud warning after attempted Kingscourt scam

Gardai in Bailieborough are warning business-owners of fraudsters operating in the area after a Kingscourt company were nearly stung in a suspected payment scam.
Sergeant Richard Bolger told Northern Sound radio that the company received a letter purporting to be from a regular supplier to which it makes regular electronic transfer payments.
“A bogus letter asked the client company to make any future payments to a new bank account being used by the Kingscourt-based company and provided a BIC and IBAN number,” said Sgt Bolger.
“This letter was very professional and convincing but fortunately in this case one of the directors became suspicious and reported the matter to gardai before any funds were transferred.
The Bailieborough sergeant urged “all businesses to be alert to this type of fraud that can appear genuine at first inspection”.
“If in any doubt, please contact the gardai,” he said.
