Munterconnught Community wins 'FibrePower your Community' competition

The community of Munterconnaught has been unveiled as the winner of eir's €250,000 nationwide “FibrePower Your Community” competition, meaning the rural community will soon have broadband speeds rivaling some of the world's biggest cities.

One of Ireland's leading telecoms provider, formerly Eircom, made the announcement this morning at Knocktemple National School, Co Cavan.

To commence in 2016, the community of Munterconnaught is set to benefit from eir's high speed “Fibre to the Home” (FTTH) broadband technology.

Launched in June 2015, the open eir competition was pitched at communities across rural Ireland who are relying on the deployment of the Government’s National Broadband plan for broadband. Open eir called on those communities to present a compelling case as to why their community should win and become the next open eir “Fibre to the Home” trial site.

Over 37 communities from across Ireland came together with a wide variety of creative projects which demonstrated why their communities’ need fibre powered broadband and how it would improve their lives.

The standard of entries was exceptional and made the task of choosing just one winner extremely difficult.

However, eir has said the winning community, Munterconnaught in this case, demonstrated a particularly keen understanding of the positive impact broadband would have on their lives, in their homes and in their businesses.
