Bank Holiday set to be a scorcher in Cavan

At long last, the sun is splitting the stones in Cavan and people are dusting off the barbecues that have lain in their sheds all winter, gathering cobwebs, writes Ultan Sherry.

It’s set to be warm this weekend with temperatures getting into the low 20s, and will remain settled until the middle of next week.
If you’re the adventurous type, there’s a million reasons to get out and about in Cavan on the Bank Holiday weekend, least not the 40th annual Killinkere Jamboree (see page 10).
For all lovers of ceol agus craic, the Cavan County Fleadh takes place in Swanlinbar throughout the weekend. It kicks off on Friday at 5.30pm with dancing competitions in St Mary’s Hall, Swanlinbar, followed by the official opening in the Chapel Square at 9pm that evening, with special guest Gearóid McKiernan of the Cavan senior football team (see page 12 for more).
You can take to the water with the Killeshandra festival of the lakes, with soccer blitzes, raft racing, and of course the famous angling competitions on Creenagh Lake (see page 32).
On Saturday, the Pink n Gold High Nelly Charity Cycle for baby Jake takes place in Ballyjamesduff. It’s open to everyone and you can come on any type of bike. The route goes from Ballyjamesduff to Virginia and Oldcastle, and is all for the cause of raising money for Jake Smith (see page 10 for update).
Sunday sees the South Leitrim/West Cavan vintage club holding a tractor and vintage run in Ballinamore. People can come in any type of old tractor, car, motorbike etc. The proceeds from the run are going towards 'Cancer Care West’ and 'My Canine Companion’.
