Garda appeal as tools stolen

Gardaí in Cavan are appealing for information regarding an early morning theft of garden tools from a shed in Ballyhaise at the weekend.
On Saturday (June 4), some time between 6.10am and 8.30am a lock on a rear garden shed was broken at a residence in Townspark in the village from which tools and a hedge-trimmer were taken.
Gardaí are urging locals to be vigilant and to secure outdoor properties.
Anyone with information, or who saw vehicles in the area around the time of the theft, is asked to contact Cavan Garda Station on 049-4368800.

Mountnugent stand-off

The latest appeal follows an incident in the Mountnugent area in recent weeks in which locals blocked a van they believed was transporting tools stolen from a local farmer.

Communities in the Mountnugent area are the latest to stage a fight-back against the tide of crime creeping into their local area, after a van suspected of being used by thieves was dramatically penned in until gardaí arrived on the scene.
Despite the two unknown men in the silver van making their escape across fields before the authorities arrived, Sinn Féin councillor Noel Connell says people are now “fed up” following thefts in the Dungimmon area last month, where three sheds were broken into. “They’re fed up and they’re willing and starting to put up a fight against it again,” he told The Anglo-Celt. Two strimmers and one hedge trimmer were stolen during the incidents on May 14, along with an assortment of other garden tools. The stand-off between neighbours and the suspect van occurred on a rural back road in the early hours of May 31 last, when word was sent round by one vigilant neighbour and others rallied to the call.
