Council secures €115K for Killycannon works

The design process for imminent works to be carried out at an accident blackspot on the outskirts of Cavan Town is currently underway, after the Council secured €115,000 in funding for the work from Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII).

Cavan County Council made the application for funding for work at Killycannon Hill on the N55 Cavan road to Ballinagh to TII, formerly the National Roads Authority (NRA), earlier this year.
Approval was granted “in recent weeks”, a spokesperson for the local authority informed The Anglo-Celt, adding that the money will fund design, construction, health and safety, procurement and traffic management measures at the site.
Earlier this month, two-time Olympic boxer John Joe Nevin and his young family had a narrow escape when a car travelling down the hill towards Ballinagh clipped his van.
Such incidents prompted Cavan-Monaghan TD Niamh Smyth to call for an emergency meeting with the Minister for Transport regarding the condition of roads in the constituency.
Following last week’s report in the Celt, the council has said that the €115,000 allocation will be used to fund a new pavement overlay including changes to the vertical alignment of the road.
“This will add to the signage works carried out by Cavan County Council in early 2016, which incorporated a variable messaging sign advising drivers to slow down. The design process has commenced, with procurement of a surfacing contractor to follow,” said a spokesperson.
Expressing a hope that the works would help improve safety at this location, she also urged drivers to take care on all roads in the county.
“It is imperative that all road users travel at a speed appropriate to the road layout, pay attention to warning signs, take account of poor weather conditions and ensure that their vehicles are free from defects with particular focus on tyres,” she concluded.
