Woman found dead at Cavan apartments

Gardaí in Cavan are investigating all the circumstances of the death of a 54-year-old woman this morning.

At approximately 6.35am Gardaí attended the scene of an incident outside an apartment at Kempton Court, Cavan Town where Emergency Services were treating a woman for serious head injuries.

Believed to have been the mother of two children, the Latvian-national is understood to have been living in Ireland for a number of years with her partner.

The woman was subsequently taken by ambulance to Cavan General Hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

It is understood that the incident may have occurred at a first storey apartment with balcony. 

Gardaí have spent the morning conducting door to door enquiries at all Kempton Court apartments. While the area reamains sealed off residents have been free to go about their daily business. 

One Kempton Court resident described the deceased to the Celt as 'a nice quiet woman'.

Another resident of the gated community told the Anglo-Celt that they were 'shocked' by the death, describing the gated-development as 'a quiet area where you don't expect that kind of thing to happen'.

The remains of the deceased have since been removed to the mortuary at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda where a post-mortem will be carried out this afternoon by Dr Michael Curtis, Deputy State Pathologist.

The scene currently being preserved for a forensic and technical examination and an incident room has been established at Cavan Garda Station.

A Garda Family Liaison officer has also been appointed in the case.

Investigating Gardaí are appealing to anyone who was in the Kempton Court or Drumalee areas of Cavan town between 3am and 7am to contact them. Anyone with information is asked to contact Cavan Garda Station 049-4368800 or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111.

The course of the investigation will be determined by the outcome of the post-mortem examination.
