Principal warns of traffic 'mayhem' as schools return

The principal of Breifne College in Cavan Town has warned parents and motorists to expect traffic “mayhem” at drop-off and pick-up times when over 700 students are due to return to school on Monday morning.

John Crotty is urging patience and caution as work on the new school building is ongoing, meaning that parking is severely restricted. The school is also liaising with local gardaí on a traffic management plan.
As a result of the building work, parents no longer will have access to the all-weather pitch area to park their cars. “There is now no parking place available for parents to drive into on the site,” said Mr Crotty.
The buses will still be allowed to take their normal route and drop off students and pick them up again on site. “At the best of times there is mayhem in the mornings and in the evening time. It will take a few days for the drop off and collection arrangements to settle down into a routine. I would be recommending to parents not to come in to collect their sons and daughters until around ten past four and allow the buses to get cleared from 3.50pm,” said Mr Crotty.
“There are good times ahead with the advent of a new building. We will take the pain and share it out. I am asking everybody, teachers, students, parents to have patience and to extend courtesy to all – it will all be well worth it in a year’s time,” he added.
Mr Crotty is liaising with Cavan Institute in relation to the availability of students from the Security Programme. “They have helped us out previously during busy times, particularly when there were events taking place at the college,” he said.
