Driver in critical condition after by-pass crash

A local driver remains in a critical condition in hospital in Dublin following a two car collision on the Cavan N55 by-pass last night.

Diversions are currently in place as gardai have sealed the road off and are awaiting the arrival of specialist crash-scene investigators.

One driver is currently being treated at Beaumont Hospital in Dublin for injuries sustained in the crash, while the driver of the second vehicle also sustained serious injuries in the incident.

The N55 between the Dublin Road Roundabout and Ballinagh Roundabout remains closed today (Thursday, December 1), and the road is not expected to be reopened until later today.

There have been reports of massive tail-backs of traffic on the approach to Cavan Town from the N55 Ballinagh direction and motorists are being warned to check their routes before travelling.Met National weather service Met Eireann meanwhile have issued a weather warning for Cavan today, after a Status Orange fog warning was issued yesterday evening.

With dense fog overnight and lingering into this morning with some frost also, drivers are being urged to take caution on the roads and use their fog lights.
