Arrest after Belturbet growhouse discovered

A man aged in his 40s has been arrested following the discovery of a cannabis growhouse near Belturbet yesterday morning (Tuesday), February 21.

Gardaí are investigating the discovery of the growhouse in early morning raid at a property at Kinagha Beg, near Drumalee, Belturbet.

Cannabis plants, with an estimated value of €7,200 were seized, and a 40-year-old man was conveyed to Ballyconnell Garda station and detained under section 4 of Criminal Justice Act.

The man can be held for up to 48 hours, without charge, after which he must be charged or released. At the time of going to print, he was still being questioned.

 

Sentence

Meanwhile, a Polish national found tending cannabis plants when gardai raided a growhouse in CO Meath last year has been sentenced to four-year prison sentence, with the final two-years suspended.

Michael Spiewak (25) with an address at Cullentra, Ross pleaded guilty to the unlawful cultivation of cannabis plants on or about March 18 last year at the Mountnugent address.

His barrister told Trim Circuit Court that Spiewak had been duped into working there, and the judge backdated the sentence to last March when Spiewak was first taken into custody.
