Census 2016 paint a picture of modern Cavan

The Central Statistics Office has released details of Census 2016 that show that although divorces and separations are on the increase in Cavan, it is happening at a slower rate than the national average.

Across the nation Ireland’s population grew to 4,761,865 in April 2016, an increase of 173,613 (3.8%) since April 2011. The numbers are influenced by the increasing birthrate as the total number of non-Irish nationals fell slightly to 535,475, or 11.6% of the population, the first decline since the introduction of this question in 2002.

The report, which is the first detailed return on the 2016 Census following a preliminary report last year, shows that there are more males than females in County Cavan. Cavan’s population in April 2016 was comprised of 38,330 males and 37,846 females. The numbers divorced or separated people continues to increase. There were 3,410 people divorced or separated in Cavan, a rate of 4.5%, compared to the national rate of 4.7%.

The average age of Cavan’s population in April 2016 was 37.2 years, compared to 36.0 years in April 2011. Nationally, the average age of the population was 37.4, up from 36.1 in April 2011. The number of males aged 65 and over increased by 22% to 296,837, while the number of females aged 65 and over increased by 16.7% to 340,730.

On the night of the Census there were 17,061 dwellings in Cavan that had broadband, an increase of 19.7% since April 2011. 2,698 dwellings had non-broadband internet access, an increase of 10.4%, while the number of dwellings with no internet access fell by 25.0% to 6,318.
