Glass factory fire sees one person hospitalised

An employee of the former Quinn Glass plant had to receive medical treatment after a blaze this morning.

The fire took hold at approximately 4am this morning and fire services were called to the Encirc factory in Derrylin, close to the Cavan border at Ballyconnell.

The company suspect the fire was caused as a result of a defect on one of their machines, but investigations are ongoing.

Damage was caused to a section of the roof by the collection of heat an oil. Most of the plant is now fully operational.

The person who was injured in the incident was close to the fire and was apparently sent to hospital as a precaution. He was treated, discharged from hospital and is expected to return to work today.

A spokesperson from the company told The Anglo-Celt: 'There was a fire at the Encirc plant in Derrylin, Co. Fermanagh in the early hours of Thursday morning, which was dealt with quickly and efficiently by our team and the emergency services. One member of the Encirc team was sent to hospital and has since been released.

'Operations at the plant have since resumed, with the large majority running as normal and we expect no impact on customer supply.'

There has been a number of fires at the plant. In 2014 PSNI investigated a suspected arson attack; no one was injured.

In 2006 four people sustained burns after an element in an electrical panel burned out.
