Minister “postpones visit to Holy Family School at crucial stage”

The decision by Minister Finian McGrath to postponed his planned visit to the Holy Family School has been greeted with dismay by one local political representative.

Deputy Niamh Smyth said the minister's lack of engagement was regrettable: “This is such a crucial stage for the new project for The Holy Family School, its pupils, staff and parents. I have invited the Minister down to visit the school to see first-hand the conditions the students and staff are expected to work in. It is simply not acceptable.”

Deputy Smyth said she was informed by Minister Richard Bruton that the project has progressed passed Stage 2B and that once this is finalised by the Department the school will be notified.

“The excuse of “getting things right” with this project has been used to justify its delay. This simply does not wash with me. In my view there wasn’t the political will to get this project over the line until now,” Deputy Smyth said.

Reacting to the announcement by Minister McGrath that he can no longer visit The Holy Family School next Monday Deputy Smyth said: “This in my view is very disappointing for pupils and staff. It has upset their day which they have planned for over the past two weeks. The Minister has said he will try rescheduling his visit at my request on Monday, October 23rd at 11.30am.”
