Minister Katherine Zappone was in Cavan to dish out over half a million in funding to youth groups, including €5,000 for a youth cafe in Belturbet, under the auspices of the Bounce Back Youth Service project.

Over half a million in grants for youth group equipment

The Minister for Children and Youth Affairs Katherine Zappone was doing her best Santa impersonation at the Hotel Kilmore last week when she attended a special Cavan and Monaghan Education and Training Board (CMETB) event bearing gifts. She dished out €580,000 in equipment grants to a total of 146 volunteer-led youth groups across Cavan and Monaghan.
Hundreds of young people and dedicated volunteers congregated to witness the handing over of cheques to representatives of the various different groups from right across the constituency. Some 71 groups in County Cavan benefited from a total of €281,413.27 with the balance going to Monaghan groups.
In doing so, Minister Zappone acknowledged the “extraordinary contribution of volunteers, their care and commitment and the ways in which you build community and which contributes to the suCCÉss of our country”.
She was assured by Minister for Arts Heather Humphreys that she was looking at “the best group of volunteers in Ireland”.
The chief executive of CMETB, John Kearney, paid tribute to Ministers Zappone and Humphreys for their work in co-ordinating the delivery the Local Voluntary Club Awards as a proactive measure in progressing the Action Plan for Rural Development in supporting the economic and social progress of the Cavan and Monaghan region.
“There are many excellent staff within CMETB organisation who will oversee the administration of this project and ensure that value for money is provided for each allocation, a particular note of appreciation due to youth officer Maureen McIntyre who has worked tirelessly in ensuring every attention to detail was provided in working closely with the youth clubs and groups,” he said.
The CEO was also quick to acknowledge and congratulate the work of each youth club and endorsed the volunteering benefits to local communities.
