Cavan Monaghan at 56% yes

Fianna Fáil Deputy Brendan Smith was on the No side of the campaign. Speaking to the Celt he said that even before the conclusing of voting yesterday it looked as if the Ammendment would be repealed: ““I thought it would be at least in the high 50s.”

He said that he campaigned for what he believed in: “This was a matter of conscience. We [the Fianna Fáil party] had a free vote in the protection of Life Legislation that came before the Oireachtas in 2013.”

He said: “We will respect the decision of the electorate,” but added, “The detail of the legislation will be gone through line by line at committee and report stage.” Deputy Smith anticipates that there will be “tweaking” of the legislation as it moves through the Oireachta.

The numbers so far are: Monaghan Yes 8898 (53%) No 7857 (47%), Cavan Yes 11264 (58%) No (42%), giving a constituency tally of 56% Yes to 44% No.
