ATM was loaded with cash for Christmas week

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses who may have seen a convoy of vehicles, believed to be linked to a smash and grab theft of an ATM.

A digger was used to steal an ATM filled with cash for Christmas week in the early hours of Sunday morning in Ballybay. The ATM, which was removed from the wall of the Ballybay Bank of Ireland branch by excavator at around 3am last Sunday morning, was loaded on to a trailer and driven from the town by a dark coloured Toyota Land Cruiser in the direction of Cootehill or Carrickmacross.
The Land Cruiser is believed to have been joined by a silver coloured BMW car, and gardaí are asking motorists in the region, including those with dash cam footage, to contact them.
One of the wheels on the passenger side of the trailer was missing.
The machinery used in removing the ATM from the wall of the Main Street banking premises had earlier been stolen from in the Creighanroe area, on the Castleblayney to Keady Road.
Gardaí say at least three men were involved in the incident, with the possibility that the criminal operation was assisted by others also.
Superintendent Fergus Treanor, based out of Carrickmacross, is also calling anyone who was out socialising in the Ballybay area that night who may have witnessed any suspicious activity to come forward.
It’s believed the ATM had been filled for the Christmas week, with the machines capable of holding more than €100,000 at a time.
