Almost €4K in funding for west Cavan bogs

Some €3,900 in funding has been approved for the West Cavan Bogs Association (WCBA) to assist with a project recording and archiving people's memories of the bog.

Fine Gael Senator for Cavan Monaghan, Joe O'Reilly, confirmed the allocation today.

Announcing the funding, the Minister stated that she was delighted to see the diverse range of initiatives put forward by these active community groups and environmental organisations under the Peatlands Community Engagement Scheme in 2019. "This funding will support the development of walking trails and looped walks around bogs, education programmes and activities for primary and secondary school children, photographic exhibitions, talks and workshops on all aspects associated with raised bogs and raised bog restoration, visitor facilitation in local community buildings and local area amenity development in raised bog areas," said Senator O'Reilly.

The Minister went on to praise the work done on a voluntary basis by local community groups in nature conservation. She said: “The sense of community spirit is strong in rural Ireland today and the funding awarded this year under the Scheme will in part recognise the efforts by local communities in continuing to champion the conservation benefits of our unique raised bogs whilst recognising the traditions of our past.”
