GeoPark guide Aidan Brady explains what the mural at Templeport Boathouse, dedicated to St Mogue depicts, while Cathaoirleach of Cavan County Council Paddy O'Reilly listens

College unveils mural in tribute to journey of St Mogue

Braving inclement weather, which at times may have made St Mogue himself turn back in his travels to and from his native island on Templeport Lake, the Transition Year students of St Mogue’s College, Bawnboy, unveiled a mural last week at the boat house detailing the local saint’s journey in life.

The project, which began back in January with funding provided by Cavan County Council, depicts the journey taken by St Mogue, or Máedóc, from when he was held hostage at the hands of the High King of Ireland, to studying in Wales under St David and his return to Ireland, to Wexford and the founding of the Diocese of Ferns.

The mural was unveiled by Cathaoirleach of Cavan County Council, Cllr Paddy O’Reilly (FG), at a ceremony last Wednesday at the boat house overlooking both Inisbrefny island and St Mogue’s Church. The event was attended by teaching staff, the students involved, local elected officials, clergy and religious officials.

It’s hoped that the mural and what it details will now become a firm favourite for tourists visiting the region as part of the overall UNESCO GeoPark located across Cavan and Fermanagh.

Cllr O’Reilly, though acknowledging that St Mogue’s College was the smallest of the VEC schools in the county, said what it lacked in size it more than made up for in stature and the effort both its staff, students and the wider community put into supporting successful initiatives.

'Where this has been placed now, just across from the island, it couldn’t be located in a better place. It will be something that tourists will come to see because it transcends so many areas of both culture and heritage,' Cllr O’Reilly said.
