Starting 2012 on a positive note
by Linda O'Reilly Updated: Wednesday, 4th January, 2012 5:30pm
A new year, a new start - let's make it a good one! Yes 2010 was tough and perhaps 2011 was tougher and who knows what 2012 holds in store just yet.
Remember tough times don't last long; but tough people do. And Cavan people can certainly be categorised as tough.
January can be a difficult month for many people - the downer after the big celebrations of Christmas and the New Year. But it doesn't have to be a depressing month.
Focusing on the positive things in our lives will lift all of our spirits and all that positive energy can make good things happen.
So to get 2012 off on the right foot, The Anglo-Celt is endeavouring to bring you a good news issue for the last week of January but we need your help.
Certainly we are guilty of emphasising the bad news stories rather than the good; as they have the shock factor or are what the man on the street is talking about. But we want to bring you more good news stories in 2012 and while we have many qualified and senior journalists in our newsroom, we are not mind readers.
So please pick up the phone or get on the email and let us know about your good news stories. It could be that you have overcome great adversity in 2011 and are looking forward to better things in 2012. Think of Ballinamore teenager Meadhbh McGivern, for example, who had her successful liver transplant last September.
Or perhaps, you've taken out your old accordion, dusted it down and are going to get back in shape for Fleadh 2012 in Cavan town. And we all know what a good news story the All-Ireland Fleadh has been for Cavan town.
Did you meet the love of your life in 2011 and are looking forward to getting married in 2012?
Have you started up a new business and are battling against tough economic times to create employment and make a real go of things?
Have you had some personal success in your life? Or are you planning a major charity event for 2012?
If it's newsworthy and it has a feel-good factor about it; we want to hear about it.
Email a brief outline of your story to linda@anglocelt.ie by January 19 and we will endeavour to bring our readers as many of your good news stories as we can on January 26.
Obviously, it may be impossible to have nothing BUT good news in an issue of our newspaper (there will always be court reports and obituaries...) but we in The Anglo-Celt are going to give it our best shot to bring you the best news possible from all around the county on January 26.
There is plenty to look forward to in our personal and professional lives if we choose to focus on the positive.
Looking at Cavan quickly for example: Retailers have battled against the threat of cross-Border shopping and are reporting a busier Christmas period in 2011 than 2010; there are a number of capital projects progressing around the county - the new ring road for Cavan town, the Ballyconnell inner-relief road, the Belturbet bypass and a further extension at Virginia College to name a few; the Fleadh is coming back; there's the Cavan Summer Festival; sporting success with the minors, the U21s and the ladies all hungry for further success...
The potential is endless and it's early in the year yet. So to get County Cavan and its people off to a positive start for 2012; get cracking and email us in your good news stories. Is Féidir linn!
